Apply an Overarching Rule

An Overarching Rule can be used to group two or more course collections together and apply restrictions to all the collections within that group. This is particularly useful when allowing the students to select a range of credits from course collections.

For example, a student may be required to select a minimum of 10 credits and a maximum of 30 credits from two course collections. An overarching rule can then be applied restricting the total credits selected from both course collections to exactly 40 credits.

The DPT course options displayed below currently requires the student to select courses from both collections as represented by the AND operand.

The Edit Overarching Group Names screen displays the sequence number, code and name of all the course options in the DPT.

The Operand field shows the relationship between the two course options, however this can not be edited in this screen.

The Group Name column contains a dropdown list allowing each course option to be added to a group. In this example both course options will be added to Group A so that an overarching rule can then be applied to the course options within the group.

Students will now be required to select a minimum of 10 and maximum of 30 credits from each of the course collections subject to an overarching rule that restricts the total number selected to exactly 40 credits.

A possible selection from Group A might involve selecting 10 credits from sequence 070 and a further 30 credits from sequence 080 giving a total of 40 credits. This would satisfy both credit ranges applied to the two course collections and the overarching rule for Group A.
